MEA, Inc. of St. Louis, MO is hosting a 2-day workshop on Numerical Modeling in Geotechnical Engineering. The workshop will be on January 25-26, 2019 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and will be taught by Dr. Siavash Zamiran, P.E.

This course is an introduction to modeling geotechnical problems using commercially available geotechnical programs with an emphasis on FLAC. Different geotechnical programs and numerical methods will be discussed and compared with each other. Principals of numerical modeling will be described. The modeling procedure for several practical geotechnical examples (including seismic loading) will be demonstrated using FLAC. The material is useful for students and professionals in different fields including civil, geotechnical, mining, petroleum, and geology engineering. Attendees will be awarded 5 PDH Credits for a single day registration, or a total of 10 PDH Credits for full enrollment.

TOPICS COVERED IN THE WORKSHOP INCLUDE:
  • Introduction to Computational Geotechnics
  • Commercial Geotechnical Programs
  • Theoretical Considerations
  • Numerical Modeling in FLAC

It was a pleasure to be invited by Petroleum Engineering Department of University of North Dakota to present a short course on computational geomechanics. The course was held on April 2018 in Grand Forks, ND. The main objective of this short course is the implementation of numerical modeling and geomechanical simulation in petroleum engineering. The course focuses on practical application of numerical modeling on simulation and prediction of geomechanical problems such as wellbore stability analysis, hydraulic fracturing and injection into a porous media. Several topics including elasticity and plasticity of the rock medium, constitutive models, stress distribution, and permeability considerations will be discussed. Simulation procedure of isotropic and transversely isotropic medium and faults and discontinuities will be presented. Commercial programs for geomechanical modeling will be introduced, and finite difference and finite element methods for numerical modeling will be described. The finite difference program, FLAC developed by Itasca Consulting Group Inc. will be considered for conducting practical simulations.

Course topics were including:
  • Introduction to numerical modeling in geomechanical medium
  • Introduction to FLAC
  • Example application of wellbore stability analysis
  • Example application of hydraulic fracturing and fluid injection into porous medium
  • Constitutive models used in geomechanical medium
  • Permeability considerations
  • Discontinuity and faults modeling in geomechanical medium

This month in the dates of 22nd and 23rd, a geotechnical workshop was presented by Siavash Zamiran, PhD Candidate and instructor in School of Engineering titled "Introduction to Computational Geotechnics". The workshop was held based on Civil Engineering Department in SIUE and Geo-Institute SIUE chapter.
This workshop was an introduction to modeling geotechnical problems using commercially available geotechnical programs. Several geotechnical programs and numerical methods were discussed and compared with each other. Principals of numerical modeling and the modeling procedure of different problems were demonstrated. The workshop was free of charge and 10 PDH credits were assigned to participants for their 10 hours enrollment. Students and professionals from SIUE, AECOM Technology Corporation, and Leidos Engineering Inc. participated in this workshop.
The materials covered in the workshop are now available free and online through this link.

“Numerical Modeling in Geotechnical Engineering” workshop was held in Department of Civil Engineering, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) by Siavash Zamiran, PhD student and Research/Teaching Assistant on October 17 and 18, 2014. In this workshop, an introduction to numerical analysis in geotechnical engineering was discussed and some practical examples in numerical modeling were covered including shallow foundations, stone columns, seepage analysis, slope stability and slope rehabilitation modeling by nails and anchors. Furthermore, some discussions about dynamic analysis were considered. Participants were from universities in Missouri and practical engineers from consulting and contractor companies in St. Louis metro area. The participants received up to 12 Professional Development Hours. Special thanks go to SIUE Civil Engineering faculty including Dr. Abdolerza Osouli, Dr. Jianpeng Zhou and Mr. Brent Vaughn.

Flyer of October workshop is published in ASCE St. Louis newsletter

9/6/2014

The flyer of the fall workshop in SIUE has been published in ASCE St. Louis section newsletter in September 2014 issue. This workshop is going to be held in October in SIUE campus by Siavash Zamiran and up to 12 PDH credits will be assigned to the attendees.
